Abstract:
Methods for estimating snow water equivalent in a complex environment are crucial for managing water resources, because the majority of the water supply of the semiarid interior of the western United States originates as snow. This synthesis paper investigates methods for estimating Snow Water Equivalent (SWE) in high and mid elevation terrains as well as open and vegetative sites. The drawbacks of these methods and the potential effectiveness of machine learning methods for snow product estimation from remotely sensed measurements are also investigated
