Brad Coats receives 2021 University Foundations teaching award

Brad Coats

Congratulations to Brad Coats for receiving one of the 2021 University Foundations Teaching Awards. Coats is an academic advisor in the College of Education, and an adjunct instructor in the Department of Curriculum, Instruction and Foundational Studies.

Each year one faculty member from each of nine course categories are recognized by University Foundations and the General Education Committee. Coats received an award for the “Finishing Foundations” category.

“Dr. Coats embraces the importance of reflection as an opportunity for his students to develop a capacity for change,” wrote Sherry Dismuke in her faculty nomination. “This helps to facilitate dispositions of open-mindedness, and respect for multiple perspectives.”

Recipients are nominated by fellow instructors or department chairs based on evidence of exemplary teaching, creativity in course design or implementation, and excellence in translating disciplinary methods of inquiry to non-majors. Roughly 500 instructors teach Boise State’s foundational courses for non-majors. These teachers are responsible for approximately one-third of all the courses students take. The awards were created in 2019 to recognize University Foundations instructors.
