The vision for establishing an Emeritus Guild at Boise State University began in 2006 under the leadership Faculty and encouragement of Provost Dr. Sona Andrews, faculty and staff. Recognizing the importance of honoring retired faculty and staff, Dr. Andrews supported the creation of exploratory committees tasked with defining what such a guild could become. These committees conducted focus groups and sent out surveys to gathered input from retirees to shape the Guild’s mission, structure, and purpose.
From the outset, the Emeritus Guild was designed to be independent from the university, operating as a self‑supporting organization. Membership dues—set at $25 per year or $250 for a lifetime membership—were designated to cover operating expenses. All labor and leadership within the Guild were to be provided by volunteers, reflecting the spirit of service and community.
Provost Andrews provided two years of financial and administrative support during the Guild’s formation. And would continue to provide the necessary technology to stay current and updated. As a strong advocate for the initiative, she served on the steering committee for more than two years and played a central role in bringing the concept to life.
After extensive planning, data gathering, and numerous meetings, the Emeritus Guild Executive Committee was established. This governing body was responsible for defining the roles and responsibilities of both the Guild and the university, as well as managing the logistical framework necessary for the Guild’s operation.
The Guild became officially recognized in 2008, culminating in a grand open house held on November 14, 2008, at the Iron Gate Lounge—formerly located at the site where the Boise State Business Building now stands at University and Capitol. The Guild was formally enacted shortly thereafter, on January 14, 2009.
