ENGLIT 424 Advanced Topics in English Literature: The 19th- Century American Short Story

Some nineteenth-century American authors considered magazines – full of regional stories – to be the closest thing to a national literary form. In this edition of ENGLIT 424, students will investigate the short fiction of nineteenth-century America to understand pre- and post-Civil War ideas about the role of literature in the life of a diverse nation. Reading some stories in common and others for independent research, students will create a collective history of the nineteenth-century American short story as a genre inseparable from the nation’s unofficial motto, E pluribus unum. We will look for the successors of the 19th-century short story in today’s diverse forums for creative writing.
