In the Spotlight

by Danny Appleford

I was able to have my first ever experience shout-casting for Rainbow Six Siege this last week and it was possibly the most fun I’ve ever experienced. Boise State Esports held a caster clinic for individuals looking to join the on-screen talent crew. I was able to come down to the esports arena for the first time and try it out for myself.

As an avid fan of competitive video games, I had always watched casters and analysts from the comfort of my own home. I would have never guessed that one day I would be up on the stage myself. There was a lot more that went into the production than I originally thought. You have one person running the broadcasting side of things and then you had two people actually casting the game. I never really realized how much went into changing the screen from your casters to the gameplay. Boise State has a whole room adjacent to the arena just for their broadcast. This isn’t your average streamer setup either, it looks like something you would find at a high-end news station.

I hadn’t watched much of Rainbow Six Siege before, just played a few games of it when it first came out. My lack of experience made it intimidating to cast, but my co-caster Brenner “Bear” Ladd helped me out with that. He had actually played the game competitively before and cast it too. That made me feel a lot better about being on camera and it taught me a lot about the game itself. Overall, casting was a super fun experience and I would definitely recommend anyone who wants to try it to do so. Boise State Esports is always looking for new casters and broadcast talent. You can check it out yourself on their website!
