Inclusive access (IA) allows students to access ALEKS, along with an e-textbook, at a cheaper price compared to purchasing directly through ALEKS. If you are considering opting out of IA, please email firstyearmath@boisestate.edu to address your questions– opting out will result in lost access to course materials in the middle of the term. Once a student opts out, ALEKS access must be purchased at the market rate (more expensive). Please note that ALEKS access is required for all First Year Math classes.

Once a student has gained access to ALEKS either through IA or purchasing it as the market rate, they can log into ALEKS through their Canvas course page. 

When you first log in, you will complete an Initial Knowledge Check (IKC), a ~30 minute assessment that determines what you already know and builds your personalized learning path. From there, you will continue learning and mastering topics each week. 

Every student has a unique calculated topic goal each week to support their own progress in the course. Your weekly topic goal is calculated roughly using this formula:

Weekly Topic Goal = (Total Course Topics – Mastered Topics) / (Weeks Left in Semester)

Example:

Suppose a course contains 287 total topics, you have mastered 174 topics, and 12 weeks remain:

(287 – 174) / 12 = 113 / 12 = 9.42 -> 10 topics/week

You would need to complete roughly 10 topics each week to finish your ALEKS pie on schedule by week 16. The topic goal for the following week would be 184 topics. 

Your topic goal is updated and calculated on a weekly basis- to get full credit each week for your ALEKS topic goal, you must meet the weekly updated topic goal.

While ALEKS automatically identifies an optimal learning sequence, mastering the platform’s navigation allows you to advance through your assignments with greater efficiency. If you encounter a challenging topic, you have the flexibility to bypass it and revisit it at a later time. The tutorial provided below demonstrates how to manage your topics and transition into Review Mode.

In addition to guided course assignments, ALEKS offers several built-in tools to help you review and prepare for exams. You can enter Review Mode to revisit and practice topics you have already completed, or create Custom Worksheets for extra practice tailored to areas you have mastered. ALEKS also provides built-in Learning Resources directly within the platform, including video tutorials, a digital textbook, and a key terms dictionary.

1. Open the main menu by clicking the three stacked lines (hamburger menu) in the upper-left corner of your pie screen.
2. Select Worksheet, then click New ALEKS worksheet.

ALEKS will generate a custom worksheet featuring practice problems based on topics you have already mastered.
