First-Year Math Courses

This course is meant for students who 1) have not taken a college math course and 2) feel they would benefit from a fresh start at mathematics.

Perhaps you’ve never felt confident in your math skills. If so, this class might be the right start for you. We believe you are capable at doing mathematics, and this course is designed to help you learn math in a way that helps you develop your mathematical skills as well as your confidence in using those skills.

Serves as a prerequisite for: Math 123, Math 133, Math 153

Math 108 is a course only offered currently in a 7 week session paired with a second 7 week Math 143 class. This intermediate algebra class helps students prepare for all of the concepts and material they will need to be fluent with to succeed in a College Algebra (Math 143 Course)

Math 123 is a liberal arts math class that helps students learn several meaningful mathematics applications in every day life. This Foundations of Math (FM) course explores mathematical concepts and principles including finances, probability and statistics, as well as voting.

Please note: Boise State also offers Math 123P, which covers the same course content, but meets for additional time each week to provide additional support to succeed in the course.

Math 133 is a course that explores how functions can be used to model real-world scenarios. This Foundations of Math (FM) course helps students prepare for College Algebra (Math 143) by helping them develop a conceptual understanding of some of the foundational principles of functions and their representations.

Serves as a prerequisite for: Math 143, Math 254

Math 143 is a College Algebra course, as well as part 1 of our Precalculus sequence, that thoroughly investigates functions, and prepares students for future success in Calculus.

Serves as a prerequisite for: Math 144, Math 160

Math 144 is our Trigonometry course, our part 2 of our Precalculus sequence. Math 144 explores the Unit Circle and trigonometric functions, helping students prepare for the calculus sequence.

Math 144 is unique in that it can be taken as a co-requisite (taken at the same time) with Math 143, or with Math 170.

If students plan to take Math 144 in tandem with Math 143, they will first enroll in Math 143, and then will need to contact FYM for a permission number for Math 144. If they plan to take it as a co-req with Math 170, they will first enroll in Math 144, and then will need to contact the Math Department for a permission number into Math 170.

Math 149 is a College Algebra course specifically designed for students in the College of Business and Economics (COBE). It is a course equivalent to Math 143 and is also a Foundations of Math (FM) course.

Math 149 also explores functions, with an emphasis on utilizing business applications and excel as a tool to explore mathematical modeling.
