Every First-Year Math course—whether offered on campus or online, and regardless of session duration—is highly coordinated. This ensures that all students receive an equivalent learning experience and comprehensive coverage of identical course material.
FYM Courses
Math 103
This course is meant for students who 1) have not taken a college math course and 2) feel they would benefit from a fresh start at mathematics.
Perhaps you’ve never felt confident in your math skills. If so, this class might be the right start for you. We believe you are capable at doing mathematics, and this course is designed to help you learn math in a way that helps you develop your mathematical skills as well as your confidence in using those skills.

Note: MATH 108 remains available as a 7-week course attached to a second 7-week course of MATH 143.
1. Liberal Arts Pathway
Goal: General education math class. Meets Foundations of Math (FM) requirement.
- Starts at Level 1: MATH 103 (Mathematical Transition for Success)
- Progresses to: MATH 123 (Math in Modern Society) or MATH 123P (Math in Modern Society with support)
2. Statistics Pathway
Goal: Competence as a statistics consumer and producer.
- Starts at Level 1: MATH 103
- Progresses to: MATH 153 (Statistical Reasoning) or MATH 153P (Statistical Reasoning with support)
- Advanced course: MATH 254 (Introduction to Statistics)
3. Elementary Education Pathway
Goal: Confidence and competence in math for elementary education teachers.
- Starts at Level 1: MATH 103
- Progresses to: MATH 157 (Numbers and Operations for Teachers)
- Advanced course: MATH 158 (Geometry and Measurements for Teachers) (Note: Cannot place into MATH 158 directly; must start with MATH 157)
4. Business Pathway
Goal: Foundation in algebra, calculus, and statistics.
- Starts at Level 1: MATH 103
- Progresses to: MATH 133 (Elementary Models with Functions)
- Moves to: MATH 149 (Precalculus: Functions for Business)
- Advanced course: MATH 160 (Survey of Calculus)
5. STEM / Algebra Pathway
Goal: Competence in algebra and success in subsequent math, engineering, physics, and science courses.
- Main Course Sequence: MATH 103 → MATH 133 → MATH 143 (College Algebra) → MATH 144 (Precalculus II: Trigonometric Functions) → MATH 170 (Calculus I) → MATH 175 (Calculus II)
- Additional Pathways: Higher placement options lead to MATH 161 (Mathematics for Data Science) or MATH 189 (Discrete Mathematics)
Placement and Testing Guidelines
- Your highest test score to date is always used for placement.
- You may use test scores or complete a prerequisite course for placement.
- If you lack standardized test scores (ACT/SAT) or transfer credit, take the Accuplacer exam.
