Applying to Boise State University

At Boise State, you are considered a first-year undergraduate applicant if you are applying to a Bachelor’s degree program and you have never attended a post-secondary institution. When applying to the university, you must submit the following items in order to complete your application:

• • • Online application
    • $85 application fee (non-refundable)
    • High school transcripts or marksheets
    • Proof of English proficiency
    • Photocopy of your passport name page

Once we have received all of these items, we will review your application and consider you for a place at Boise State. Admissions decisions are typically issued within two weeks of the completion of your application, though this can vary depending on the time of year and volume of applications we are receiving.

If you are accepted to Boise State and plan to study on an F-1 student visa or J-1 student exchange visa, you will need to submit a Financial Documentation Form and proof of sufficient funds in order to begin the process of applying for your student visa. If you are currently studying in the U.S. on an F-1 student visa, you will also submit copies of your current I-20, visa, and I-94 after being admitted to Boise State and will need to reach out to your current institution to request that your SEVIS record be transferred.

Academic courses at Boise State are taught in English and international students must demonstrate appropriate levels of English proficiency in order to be admissible to a degree program. Fortunately, there are a number of ways that you can demonstrate your English proficiency.

Applicants who do not meet Boise State’s minimum English proficiency requirements will be considered for admission to the Pathway Program.

English Proficiency Exemption Policy

Undergraduate applicants are exempt from submitting additional proof of English proficiency if they have completed or will complete prior to enrollment at Boise State three or more years of secondary education in the approved countries table. The primary language of instruction of each school attended must be English.

As no English proficiency policy can account for all circumstances, the International Admissions Office may require additional proof of English proficiency on a case-by-case basis.

If you feel that your background is not represented by this English proficiency policy or that you have additional substantive experience or qualifications that may be relevant to Boise State’s evaluation of your English proficiency, you may appeal this requirement. To have your appeal request considered, please complete the English Proficiency Policy Appeal Form. Access to the form will require you to log in to your applicant portal. Please note that your application for admission and application fee must be submitted in order to appeal this policy.

Unofficial Transcripts for Admissions Review

For the purposes of admissions review, Boise State accepts unofficial transcripts from international students. Unofficial transcripts may be uploaded when submitting your application, or sent to us by email after you’ve submitted your application. In order to be considered in the admissions process, your unofficial transcripts must be:

• • Clearly legible. High quality scans are recommended;
  • Be issued in English or accompanied by a certified, word-for-word English translation;
  • Clearly show the institution’s name; and
  • Clearly show the applicant’s name and identifying information.

Documents that do not meet these requirements cannot be accepted for admissions purposes.

If you are admitted to Boise State using unofficial transcripts, you will be required to submit official transcripts at the beginning of your first semester. Official documents must be received before registering for the second semester.

How to Submit Official Transcripts

All documents must be issued in English or accompanied by a certified, word-for-word English translation. If you are sending a certified English translation, you must also submit the official transcript in the original language.

Please note that we are unable to accept transcripts sent by email or fax and that we are unable to return official transcripts once we have received them.

Send Your Documents by Mail

For most countries, secondary or high school transcripts should be sent to us in a sealed envelope directly from your secondary school with their official stamp on the document and across the seal of the envelope. Documents sent directly by your country’s Ministry of Education are also acceptable. If you have taken external examinations outside of your secondary school such as Ordinary Levels, Advanced Levels, or the International Baccalaureate, results must be sent to us directly by the examination board or testing agency.
