Mary Crowell, PhD
Director, COHS Student Services and Academic Advising
Mary Crowell earned her PhD at Washington State in Education with a specialization in Cultural Studies and Social Thought where she was also a McNair Fellow. Prior, she earned her Bachelors’ degrees from the University of Idaho in Sociology and Psychology. Crowell is a proud first-generation college student. She is passionate about helping all students actualize their goals through an advising philosophy that encourages stepping out of one’s comfort zone, developing a network of supportive relationships, and funneling one’s passions into a meaningful academic experience.
Currently, Crowell directs the Student Services and Academic Advising (SSAA) Office for the College of Health Sciences – an office that connects with over two thousand students per year. Services offered involve academic advising, first year and transfer orientations, registration and enrollment in classes, four year academic plans, career planning, pre-professional advising and more within the Health Sciences. SSAA collaborates with multiple partners within, across, and outside of the institution, community, and state in recruitment, retention, and graduation efforts.
Crowell has taught courses ranging from educational psychology, introduction to research, and special topics on intersections within diversity and education. She has multiple years of experience working with special populations and federal grants where she advised for multiple TRIO programs and implemented and managed the College Assistance Migrant Program at Lewis-Clark State College. Her scholarly interests lie in using cultural and psycho-social frameworks to help students find a sense of belonging and promote agency in their educational experiences.
Growing up in the mountains of rural, northern Idaho, Crowell enjoys the water and appreciates the diverse settings of Idaho and its people. When she is not working with her Boise State team, Crowell enjoys spending time with her two kids, practicing yoga, and laughing with good friends and family.
