A 2nd NIH Regional Seminar on Program Funding and Grants Administration is confirmed for October 14-16 in San Diego, California – Make plans to attend and spread the word!

This is exciting news for NIH and our extramural research community (especially those living closer to the West Coast)!  For several years, due to limited resources, we were only able to provide one NIH Regional Seminar per year and it had to be in the Baltimore/Washington DC area.  So, you can imagine how thrilled we are that over 50 NIH & HHS experts will be bringing the latest information on the NIH grants process and policies to the opposite side of the country!  There’s even more good news…by registering before July 11, you can save with the Early Registration rate and reserve your hotel room too!

Seminar & Workshop Registration: Check it all out today at http://regionalseminars.od.nih.gov/sandiego2015/!

  • Wednesday, October 14, 2015: Optional Pre-Seminar Workshops
  • Thursday-Friday, October 15-16, 2015:  2-Day Seminar
  • Venue and Seminar Hotel:  Hilton San Diego Bayfront

What does the 2-day seminar offer?
The NIH Regional Seminar offers a comprehensive program for the NIH extramural community about the NIH grants process and related policies, including such topics as Fundamentals of the NIH, compliance, RePORT, peer review, grant writing for success, pre-award and post-award issues for administrators and investigators, animal and human subject research, and how to interact electronically with NIH.  In addition to a strong track of sessions for administrators, a redesigned track for new investigators will provide step-by-step guidance on mapping your career, an understanding of the funding process and what can be expected up to the time of award.  To add to the array of topic choices, special interest sessions are provided on topics like research integrity, data sharing, intellectual property, R&D Contracts, SBIR/STTR, foreign collaborations, and more.

Optional Pre-Seminar Workshops offered
NIH electronic Research Administration (eRA) experts will once again be offering optional 1/2 day workshops on application preparation and submission, as well as topic issues related to the eRA Commons.  In addition, this is the first year for two new optional workshop opportunities: a 1/2 day NIH Boot Camp designed for administrators with no or very little experience working with NIH, as well as a full day OHRP-NIH workshop for investigators on how to get research protocols through human subjects review.

Who will be there from NIH and HHS?
Attendees will have the opportunity to meet and attend sessions provided by approximately 50 NIH and HHS policy officers, grants management, review and program officials, as well as NIH senior leadership…all in a central location and ready to share their knowledge and experiences.  We’re updating the faculty list every few days with new experts so take a peek at http://regionalseminars.od.nih.gov/sandiego2015/faculty/.

Who should attend?
The NIH Regional Seminar is intended for those new to the grants process, including sponsored project officers and departmental administrators, investigators, faculty, graduate students, and others involved in the NIH grants process. Over the course of two days, it also provides an opportunity to those with more experience to obtain updates on grants policies and procedures.  Though there are a few advanced sessions, this seminar is not focused on those with extensive experience. Approximately 500-600 attendees are expected from around the world, providing extended opportunities for sharing and learning from peers as well as the NIH experts.

What’s the goal of the Seminar?
The goal of the NIH Regional Seminar on Program Funding and Grants Administration is to offer participants an unparalleled opportunity to gain a better perspective of NIH policies and programs, network with their peers, gather helpful NIH contacts, so that they may return to their offices and/or labs with useful information, resources, and tools to assist in obtaining and managing NIH awards.
