Olga Salinas and Jamie Jensen of the College of Education Advising Center and Uwe Reischl, professor in the Department of Community and Environmental Health, presented a paper at the Region 8 National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) Conference held in Vancouver, B.C., Canada, March 19-22.
The presentation, titled “Bridging the Gap Between Academic and Advising: Incorporating Student Development into a Large Lecture Course,” outlined a pedagogic approach that imbeds student development activities into a lecture-based course format. The strategy creates a partnership between faculty and academic advisors and allows presentation of information about Public Health career opportunities and associated academic requirements in conjunction with subject matter content. The new approach was designed to add value to large in-person lecture courses to further differentiate such courses from online courses.
