Dean, College of Health Sciences

Tim Dunnagan

As both a leader and administrator, Tim Dunnagan continually looks for ways to partner within and outside the University to benefit students, faculty and the community. Dunnagan has been the Dean of the College of Health Sciences (COHS) at Boise State University for 6 years where he is currently focused on working with faculty and staff to integrate University Health Services and Interprofessional Education more deeply into Boise State teaching and research. In his current working goal is to create the healthiest campus in America and addressing mental health issues in Idaho through university and community partnerships, where he demonstrates his desire to take on big challenges that will benefit society.

Dunnagan’s ability to translate a vision into practice is shown through his work as Dean at Boise State. During his first three years as dean, Dunnagan worked with approximately 106 faculty and staff and 3,200 students served by the departments of Community and Environmental Health, Nursing, Radiologic Sciences, and Respiratory Care. This period was distinguished by growth in research productivity and new nursing graduate programs at the masters and doctorate levels. Following Dunnagan’s third year at Boise State, the College was reconfigured by adding new units to the college, including department of Kinesiology, School of Social Work, University Health Services (UHS) and centers and institutes including Orthopedics and Biomechanics Research, Aging, Environmental Health and Safety and Health Policy. The expansion increased the College to 196 employees and 4,600 students with expenditures of approximately 19.1 million dollars. The COHS is currently configured into 4 areas that include the School of Allied Health Sciences, School of Nursing, School of Social Work and University Health Services (UHS). The reconfiguration demonstrated Dunnagan’s capacity to identify and navigate large scale change to enhance teaching and research. The new configuration has enabled the college faculty and staff to expand their footprint through partnerships within and outside the university to better address significant problems such as health care reform and population health. Dunnagan has made strong connections with the community to help support initiatives through boards and committees including the Saint Alphonsus Mission Committee, State of Idaho Health Quality and Planning Commission, Idaho Health Professions Council, Idaho Area Health Education Center, Idaho Care Plus and the COHS Board of Ambassadors. These partnerships have resulted in successful fund raising efforts that have benefited students and faculty in the college.

During his time at Montana State Dunnagan had the opportunity to enhance his skills in strategic planning and implementation as Department Head in Health and Human Development. In this position, Dunnagan provided oversight and leadership for 80 faculty and staff in diverse areas including Community Health, Early Childhood Center, Early Childhood Development, Family and Consumer Sciences, Health and Human Performance, Physical Education K-12 and Counseling. During his tenure, faculty and staff generated a unified vision and strategic plan which enhanced teaching and research efforts. For instance, research expenditures grew to be the third largest on campus and the student recruitment expanded especially in the area of exercise science. The faculty, staff and student success demonstrated his ability to lead across a diverse group of disciplines and programs.

As a faculty member at MSU, Dunnagan focused his efforts in the area of health evaluations and the application of models and theories to address health and well-being. Dunnagan has authored or co-authored over 30 refereed manuscripts and has been funded through a variety of federal and non-federal mechanisms. Prior to his time at MSU, he worked as the Director of Wellness in private and university settings for 7 years where he dedicated efforts to enhancing employee health and well-being at University of Kentucky and as a consultant with Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Hampshire. Collectively, these experiences demonstrate his capabilities as a faculty member and his progressive experiences as a leader and administrator.
