Audition Repertoire Requirements – Brass

Scales

• All 12 major scales, memorized; Two octaves where possible
• Chromatic scale, memorized; Two octaves from low C to high C

Music

• A selection of music demonstrating two contrasting styles (technical and lyrical). Prepare 2 to 5 minutes of music demonstrating each style. This may include solo repertoire, etudes, or a combination of both. Please see the suggested list for recommendations or reach out to Dr. Buie at zacharybuie@boisestate.edu.
  • Examples of Solo Literature:
    • Balay: Prelude et Ballade
    • Ropartz: Andante et Allegro
    • Thomé: Fantaisie
    • Haydn: Concerto
    • Hummel: Concerto
    • Arutiunian: Concerto
  • Examples of Etude Books:
    • Charlier: 36 Etudes Transcendantes
    • Arban: 14 Characteristic Studies
    • Voxman: Selected Studies
    • Wurm: 40 Studies
    • Brandt: 34 Studies
    • Bitsch: 20 Etudes
  • Excerpts: Three to four standard orchestral excerpts (Optional for undergraduate auditions; Required for graduate auditions)

Applicants may choose to audition in-person or remotely. To audition remotely, applicants must complete both of the following:

1. Submit a recording
2. Register for a Zoom interview with faculty.

• Major scales, 2 octaves: C,D, Eb, F, G
• • A Chromatic Scale of at least two octaves showing your full comfortable range
• An etude of your choice by Kopprasch or Maxime-Alphonse
• A solo of your choice representing your level of ability

• Chromatic scale, two and a half octaves, low F to high Bb, memorized.

Solo

• You may perform any solo from the Texas UIL Prescribed Music List 
• OR Prepare contrasting lyrical and technical etudes.

OPTIONAL Jazz and Commercial Playing (to be considered for jazz scholarship)

• Play, by yourself, any jazz standard and improvise two or more choruses.  (ie: There will never be another you, Billie’s Bounce, etc.). Demonstrate your jazz phrasing, style, and familiarity with the harmonic progression of the tune.
• AND/OR Play the shout chorus from a swing tune of your choice. Demonstrate appropriate style, phrasing, and articulation.

  • Capuzzi: Andante and Rondo, both movements
  • Bach/Bell: Air and Bourrée, both movements.
  • Haddad: Suite for Tuba, 1st movement.
  • Marcello/Little: Sonata No. 1 in F, movements 1 & 2 or movements 3 & 4.
  • OR any piece from the Texas UIL Prescribed Music List
• Examples of Etudes:
  • Bordogni/Jacobs: Legato Etudes for Tuba, #’s 2, 4, 7, 11
  • Blazhevich: 70 Studies, Volume 1, #’s 6, 7, 9, 18, 21, 28
  • Grigoriev: 78 studies, #’s 2, 5, 8, 11, 13, 19
