Audition Repertoire Requirements – Brass

Brass Audition Requirements

Scales

  • All 12 major scales, memorized; Two octaves where possible
  • Chromatic scale, memorized; Two octaves from low C to high C

Music

  • A selection of music demonstrating two contrasting styles (technical and lyrical). Prepare 2 to 5 minutes of music demonstrating each style. This may include solo repertoire, etudes, or a combination of both. Please see the suggested list for recommendations or reach out to Dr. Buie at zacharybuie@boisestate.edu.
    • Examples of Solo Literature:
      • Balay: Prelude et Ballade
      • Ropartz: Andante et Allegro
      • Thomé: Fantaisie
      • Haydn: Concerto
      • Hummel: Concerto
      • Arutiunian: Concerto
    • Examples of Etude Books:
      • Charlier: 36 Etudes Transcendantes
      • Arban: 14 Characteristic Studies
      • Voxman: Selected Studies
      • Wurm: 40 Studies
      • Brandt: 34 Studies
      • Bitsch: 20 Etudes
    • Excerpts: Three to four standard orchestral excerpts (Optional for undergraduate auditions; Required for graduate auditions)

Applicants may choose to audition in-person or remotely. To audition remotely, applicants must complete both of the following:

  1. Submit a recording
  2. Register for a Zoom interview with faculty.
