Hannah Byers

Hannah was born and raised in Boise, Idaho, graduating from Mountain View High School in 2018. She began studying at Boise State University in the fall of 2018, pursuing a B.S. in Materials Science & Engineering. Hannah began working with the Nanoscale Materials and Device Group during the 2020 spring semester of her sophomore year.

Hannah works with the DNA Construct Synthesis Team, part of the Quantum DNA research group, in the Keck Lab studying Fluorescent Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET) and excitonic coherence of DNA-templated dye aggregates. She uses a variety of steady-state spectroscopy techniques to develop a better understanding of dye-aggregate systems. Hannah worked with Donald Kellis to characterize the electronic structure of DNA-templated dye aggregates to analyze exciton coupling. More recently, Hannah will be taking a lead role in characterizing the molecular properties of asymmetric dyes. Part of her research involves collaborations with Temple University and Naval Research Laboratory.

Hannah also is a College of Engineering ambassador. An ambassador represents the college through student leadership and spends time at events that help kids learn about engineering, practices diversity and inclusion in engineering, and becomes a peer mentor to other engineering students.
