Patents/Inventions

Title: DNA Ink—Near-Field Absorption Coupling for Colorimetric Detection, DNA Ink, Chromic Photoswitches, and Chromic Molecular Ruler

  • Inventors: William B. Knowlton, Bernard Yurke, Brittany Cannon, and Elton Graugnard
  • Patent No. Issued: 11,385,235
  • Date of Patent: July 12, 2022
  • Abstract: The invention relates generally to near-field absorption coupling. More specifically, the invention pertains to colorimetric detection, DNA ink, chromic photoswitches, and chromic molecular rulers. When two or more chromophores are held within a nucleotide architecture, they can be spaced sufficiently close enough together (nanospaced) such that near-field interactions, such as but not limited to electromagnetic dipole-dipole interactions or orbital overlap, form and result in a change in absorption of wavelengths. The change in absorption and its measurement are key to the different cited applications. For the nucleotide architecture that controls the positioning of the chromophores (and hence their degree of coupling), the individual nucleotides can be polymerized into oligomers. The design of the oligomers, such as their length, can be tailored to the design of the overall architecture.

Title: Enhanced DNA Sensing via Catalytic Aggregation of Gold Nanoparticles by DNA Hybridization Chain Reaction

  • Inventors: Jeunghoon Lee, Bernard Yurke, Elton Graugnard, Will Hughes, and Bert Huttanus
  • Patent No. Issued: 9,914,960
  • Date of Patent: March 13, 2018
  • Abstract: The present invention provides compositions and methods for colorimetric detection schemes for detecting a variety of biomolecules. The compositions and methods employ DNA hybridization chain reaction for catalytic aggregation of gold nanoparticles. In this catalytic aggregation scheme, a single target DNA strand triggers the formation of multiple interparticle linkages in contrast to the single linkage formed in conventional direct aggregation schemes.

Title: Data storage methods and devices

  • Inventors: Chad S. Watson, William B. Knowlton, and Peter Mullner
  • Patent No. Issued: 8,670,267
  • Date of Patent: March 11, 2014
  • Abstract: A data storage method includes writing data to a ferromagnetic shape-memory material in its ferromagnetic state, the material exhibiting more than two stable states. A data storage device includes a non-volatile memory element containing a ferromagnetic shape-memory alloy in a martensite state, the shape-memory alloy being ferromagnetic in a plurality of stable states of the memory element.

Title: Surface Plasmon Optical Modulator

  • Inventors: Wan Kuang
  • Patent No. Issued: 8,314,985
  • Date of Patent: November 20, 2012
  • Abstract: A high-speed optical modulator based on Surface PlasmonPolariton (SPP) at the hetero-junction of a metal-insulatorsemiconductor (MIS) tunneling diode and including a phasematching optical element, such as a prism or gold-lattice structure, is described. An investigation using the coupled mode theory shows that the applied bias across the heterojunction changes the optical reflectance of an optically coupled MIS tunneling diode, such as a prism-coupled MIS tunneling diode or a gold lattice-coupled MIS tunneling diode, while the modulation efficiency achievable of the device depends on the thickness of the metal film used to construct the tunneling diode.

Title: Multi-state memory and multi-functional devices comprising magnetoplastic and magnetoelastic materials

  • Inventors: Peter Mullner and William B. Knowlton
  • Patent No. Issued: 7,710,766
  • Date of Patent: May 4, 2010
  • Abstract: Apparatus and methods are disclosed that enable writing data on, and reading data of multi-state elements having greater than two states. The elements may be made of magnetoplastic and/or magnetoelastic materials, including, for example, magnetic shape-memory alloy or other materials that couple magnetic and crystallographic states. The writing process is preferably conducted through the application of a magnetic field and/or a mechanical action. The reading process is preferably conducted through atomic-force microscopy, magnetic-force microscopy, spin-polarized electrons, magneto-optical Kerr effect, optical interferometry or other methods, or other methods/effects. The multifunctionality (crystallographic, magnetic, and shape states each representing a functionality) of the multi-state elements allows for simultaneous operations including read&write, sense&indicate, and sense&control. Embodiments of the invention may be used, for example, for storing, modifying, and accessing data for device, sensor, actuator, logic and memory applications. Embodiments may be particularly effective for non-volatile memory or other read&write, sense&indicate, and/or sense&control functions in computer or other applications; such simultaneous operation of two (or more) of said multiple functionalities open new pathways for miniaturization of devices.

Title: Electrochemical deposition method utilizing microdoplets of solution

  • Inventors: William B. Knowlton and Dale Russell
  • Patent No. Issued: 7,628,902
  • Date of Patent: December 8, 2009
  • Abstract: A method of electrochemical deposition uses microdroplets of electrolytic solution over a targeted small circuit element. Only the targeted circuit element is electrically biased so that deposition occurs on the surface of that element, underneath the microdroplet, and nowhere else unless it is under other microdroplet(s). The invented method achieves extremely accurate and selective electrochemical deposition with a tiny amount of electrolytic solution, compared to conventional submersive and/or immersive methods, and eliminates the need for masking or etching, reducing the costs of manufacture and amount of waste electrolytic solution produced.
