Sophia Mitchell

Undergraduate Research Assistant

Micron School of Materials Science & Engineering

Sophia-Mitchell

Sophia grew up in Eugene, OR, graduating from Sheldon High School in 2017. She is currently pursuing a B.S. in Materials Science and Engineering at Boise State with a technical emphasis in Industrial Engineering and plans to graduate in the Spring of 2021. Sophia began working in the Surface Science Lab in January of 2019, with an emphasis on training new undergraduate and graduate students on the SSL’s four atomic force microscopes (AFMs). In addition to her work in the SSL, Sophia serves as a Boise State tour guide, College of Engineering (COEN) ambassador, and the President of the Boise State chapter of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE). She was awarded an industrial engineering/supply chain management internship with Micron Technology for Spring 2020, and the Kem C. and Carolyn B. Gardner Scholarship for the 2020-2021 academic year by the Boise State Foundation. Sophia is currently in the process of developing multiple consumer goods for Saalt (a company that creates reusable and sustainable menstrual care products) as a product development intern.

Although relatively new to the SSL, Sophia has started to take the lead on several projects involving the characterization of 2D materials, including surface roughness and size distribution of graphene scaffolds as well as step height measurements for evaluating new atomic layer deposition (ALD) chemistries. She is also assisting as a step towards eventually leading several projects that employ advanced AFM techniques such as electrochemical AFM and scanning electrochemical microscopy (EC-AFM and SECM), magnetic force microscopy (MFM), and Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM). These projects are focused on a variety of important real world problems, including corrosion prediction and prevention as well as improved lithium ion battery electrodes and electrolytes.
