Vision Research Program (VRP)
Vision – Transform visual system trauma care for our armed forces and the nation
Eye injury and visual dysfunction resulting from battlefield trauma affect a large number of Service members and Veterans. Surveillance data from the U.S. Department of Defense indicate that eye injury accounts for approximately 15% of all injuries from battlefield trauma sustained during the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, resulting in more than 182,000 ambulatory patients and 4,000 hospitalizations between 2000 and 2011. In addition, traumatic brain injury (TBI), which affects more than 380,000 Service members between 2000 and 2018, can have significant impact on vision even when there is no injury to the eye. Research sponsored by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs showed that as many as 75% of Service members who had suffered a TBI had visual dysfunction.
The Vision Research Program (VRP) was established by Congress in fiscal year 2009 (FY09) to fund impactful military-relevant vision research that has the potential to significantly improve the health care and well-being of Service members, Veterans, their family members and caregivers, and the American public. The VRP’s program area aligns with the Sensory Systems task area of the Clinical and Rehabilitative Medicine Research Program, a core research program of the Defense Health Agency. The VRP was administered by the US Army Medical Research and Materiel Command’s Telemedicine and Advanced Technology Research Center from FY09 to FY12 and was transitioned to the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) for administration starting with the FY13 program cycle.

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Research Program (DMDRP)
The FY20 Defense Appropriations Act provides funding to the Department of Defense Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Research Program (DMDRP) to support research addressing discovery and development of therapeutics, devices, and other interventions.  As directed by the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs, the Defense Health Agency J9, Research and Development Directorate manages the Defense Health Program (DHP) Research, Development, Test, and Evaluation (RDT&E) appropriation. The managing agent for the anticipated Program Announcements/Funding Opportunities is the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) at the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command (USAMRDC).

Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Program (PRCRP)
Applications to the Fiscal Year 2020 (FY20) Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Program (PRCRP) are being solicited for the Defense Health Agency (DHA) J9, Research and Development Directorate, by the U.S. Army Medical Research Acquisition Activity (USAMRAA) using
delegated authority provided by United States Code, Title 10, Section 2358 (10 USC 2358). As directed by the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs (OASD[HA]), the DHA manages the Defense Health Program (DHP) Research, Development, Test, and Evaluation (RDT&E) appropriation. The execution management agent for this Program Announcement is the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP). The PRCRP was initiated in 2009 to provide support for research of exceptional scientific merit for the benefit of Service members, their families, and the American public. Appropriations for the PRCRP from FY09 through FY19 totaled $429.8 million (M). The FY20 appropriation is $110M. The goal of the PRCRP is to improve quality of life by decreasing the impact of cancer on active duty Service members, their families, Veterans, and the American public. The PRCRP is charged by Congress with the mission to investigate cancer risks and knowledge gaps that may be relevant to active duty Service members, their families, other military beneficiaries, and the American public.

Lupus Research Program (LRP)
The FY20 Defense Appropriations Act provides funding to the Department of Defense Lupus Research Program (LRP) to support the full spectrum of research projects or ideas that specifically focus on scientific and clinical lupus issues, which, if successfully addressed, have the potential to make a major impact in lupus research.  As directed by the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs, the Defense Health Agency J9, Research and Development Directorate manages the Defense Health Program (DHP) Research, Development, Test, and Evaluation (RDT&E) appropriation. The managing agent for the anticipated Program Announcements/Funding Opportunities is the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) at the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command (USAMRDC).
