Computing Colloquium

Margaret Martonosi, NSF Assistant Director for Computer and Information Science and Engineering

Overview of the NSF Computer Information Science and Engineering (CISE) Program

The National Science Foundation (NSF) supports a majority of US academic research in the Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) topic areas. Since February 2020, Dr. Margaret Martonosi serves as NSF CISE AD, stewarding the CISE directorate’s $1B annual budget on behalf of research, education, workforce, and infrastructure funding in CISE topic areas and for science as a whole. Martonosi is conducting a series of “virtual campus visits” to engage in conversation about a vision for CISE research going forward and to field Q&A from the CISE community. Please join us for this highly interactive session and please bring your input and questions!

Dr. Margaret Martonosi

Margaret Martonosi is the US National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Assistant Director for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE). With an annual budget of more than $1B, the CISE directorate at NSF has the mission to uphold the Nation’s leadership in scientific discovery and engineering innovation through its support of fundamental research and education in computer and information science and engineering as well as transformative advances in research cyberinfrastructure. While at NSF, Dr. Martonosi is on leave from Princeton University where she is the Hugh Trumbull Adams ’35 Professor of Computer Science. Dr. Martonosi’s research interests are in computer architecture and hardware-software interface issues in both classical and quantum computing systems. Dr. Martonosi is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She is a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

Seeking Participants for Research on Postdoctoral Scholar Training and Mentoring

A team lead by NM EPSCoR is conducting research to extend the understanding of postdoctoral training and mentoring needs, and to inform the development of training programs to meet those needs. They seek the participation of postdoctoral scholars and early career researchers (those who have completed a Ph.D. within the past 5 years) from the following science and engineering disciplines: Life Sciences, Engineering, Geosciences, Mathematics and Computer Sciences, Physical Sciences, Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences, and Education and Learning Sciences.

Participation in this research will involve responding to an online survey that will take about 15 minutes to complete. Your involvement in this research is completely voluntary and you may choose not to participate. Full informed consent information is provided at the beginning of the survey and you may opt-out at any time.

Inaugural International Virtual Postdoc Symposium

Sponsored by the National Postdoc Association, NPA, JoLs, Journal of Life Sciences, a Postdoc Community Initiative, is hosting the first virtual Postdoc Symposium on the 28th and 29th of October.

The goals of the symposium are two-fold:

  1. To showcase and highlight postdocs’ contribution to ongoing research across disciplines, and
  2.  To recognize postdoc mentors’ efforts in training the nextgen leaders in research and academia.

Symposium participation is open to former and future postdocs as well. The 2021 debut symposium will eventually morph into an annual/bi-annual event with possible in-person conferences, recognize accomplished and upcoming postdoc scientists, reward them with monetary awards, and institute research grants in the long run. Initiated by former postdocs from MIT and Harvard, JoLS, launched on June 1st, 2019, is the first-ever Peer-Reviewed, Open Access, international publication run and managed entirely by Post-Doctoral research scientists from universities and research institutes across the world.

When: October 28th and 29th
