Limited Submission Notice: DOE Energy Frontier Research Centers

Summary:

The DOE is re-competing of the Energy Frontier Research Center (EFRC) program and encourages both new and renewal applications. Applications from multi-disciplinary teams will be required to propose both discovery science and use-inspired basic research that addresses priority research directions and opportunities identified by a series of Basic Energy Sciences (BES) workshop and roundtable reports. DOE encourages applications that propose fundamental chemical sciences, materials sciences, geosciences, and biosciences research that will enable future clean energy technologies and advanced manufacturing. EFRCs under this announcement will include awards for fundamental science that underpins the Energy Earthshots Initiative.

Award:

Between $2,000,000 to $4,000,000 per award per year ($8,000,000 to $16,000,000 per award for a 4-year period).

Limited Submission Requirements and Timeline:

Three (3) applications per institution are permitted.

Only proposals approved by the Division of Research and Economic Development may be submitted to this program.  For such approval, Principal Investigators must first submit a one- to two-page white paper to preaward@boisestate.edu by January 11, 2022.

Your white paper should:

  • Name the BSU PI and co-PIs;
  • Name the partner institutions & partner institution’s PIs;
  • Identify the scientific mission of the proposed ERFC; and
  • Include a brief description of the research methods and potential scientific impact of the proposed ERFC.

If selected to submit a full proposal, PIs must ensure that proposals meet all requirements stated in the RFP, in the announcement, and in the implementing laws and regulations related to this program.

Key Submission Dates:

  • January 11, 2022 – White paper due to preaward@boisestate.edu. We encourage you to cc your Dean for visibility as well.
  • January 19, 2022 – Internal Awardees Notified
  • February 15, 2022 – Pre-Application due to DOE
  • April 26, 2022 – Full proposal due to OSP
  • May 3, 2022 – Full proposal due to DOE
