DEPSCoR Day, NASA Idaho Space Grant Consortium, Idaho NASA EPSCoR Opportunities, and Grant Writing News

Western Region DEPSCoR Day

The University of Arizona would like to invite faculty to the Western Region DEPSCoR Day. The event is presented by the Department of Defense and will be hosted at the University of Arizona in Tucson Arizona on February 24, 2022.

Leadership from the Basic Research Office in the Office of the Secretary of Defense along with Program Officers from the Air Force, Army, and Naval Research labs will participate in the conversation. Topics will cover various areas of interest to include:

  • Learn about and how to engage with the DoD, specifically AFOSR, ARL, and ONR
  • Connect with DoD Program Managers
  • Opportunity for faculty to showcase relevant research via a Poster Session
  • Research topic areas breakout sessions
  • Networking Opportunities

The Defense Established Programs to Stimulate Competitive Research (DEPSCoR) is intended to strengthen basic research in underutilized States/Territories. The Western Region includes Alaska, Arizona, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, and Wyoming.

New NASA Idaho Space Grant Consortium (ISGC) Opportunities

K-12 STEM Engagement and Informal Education Grants

​Proposed projects can focus on competitions, camps, mentoring, outreach, or other projects that happen either in or out of school– as long as the proposed project aligns with the intent of the grant and benefits multiple students and/or educators. The ISGC is especially interested in projects that include an actionable plan to serve underrepresented, low-income, rural, first-generation, and/or female students. The matching requirement is 1:1.

Proposal due date: March 11, 2022
Earliest start date: June 2022
Maximum funding request: $25,000
Pre-Proposal Teleconference: January 11, 2022

Higher Education Grants

he ISGC is particularly interested in projects contributing to NASA’s missions and/or utilizing NASA content and resources. Activities can include research activities, participation in STEM-focused competitive teams (e.g., robotics teams, etc.), participation in NASA-organized activities, workshops, special courses, or other activities to increase student engagement in STEM fields. The matching requirement is 1:1.

Maximum funding request: $25,000
Pre-Proposal Teleconference: January 11, 2022

ISGC Graduate Student Fellowships

Each year NASA Fellowship Activity seeks student-authored and independently conceived graduate research proposals responding to a NASA Research Opportunity listed in the solicitation. The NASA Fellowship Activity is designed to support NASA STEM Engagement objectives and to provide academic institutions with the ability to enhance graduate-level learning and development.

Proposal due date: March 11, 2022
Earliest start date: June 2022
Maximum funding request: $30,000

Collaboration/Travel Grants (for Higher Education)

Collaboration and Travel Grants are available for any higher education faculty and staff in need of funding to attend STEM-related events or to foster collaboration on STEM projects. To apply, fill out the proposal form (at the link at the top of the page). Proposers can request up to $5,000. Cost-sharing of at least 1:1 is required.

Maximum funding request: $5,000

New Idaho NASA EPSCoR Opportunities

Research Initiation Grants:

Idaho NASA EPSCoR funds Research Initiation Grants to provide opportunities for new researchers to gain experience and/or for established researchers to take a dramatic step in a new research direction.

Proposal due date: March 11, 2022
Earliest start date: May/June 2022
Maximum funding request: $50,000 – no cost share required
Pre-Proposal Teleconference: January 21, 2022

Collaboration Grants:

The goal of the Idaho NASA EPSCoR Collaboration Grant program is to support new collaborations for researchers (faculty and/or students) to increase Idaho’s research capabilities. Often, these types of grants are used to fund travel to research centers (e.g., a NASA Center, a National Lab, or a potential industry partner).

Application due date: Rolling but must be submitted at least 45 days before travel occurs.
Earliest start date: February 2022
Maximum funding request: $5,000
