Limited Submission Notice: Boise State University Advance Clean Energy Technologies and Low-Carbon Manufacturing

Sponsor:

US Department of Energy (DOE)

Summary:

DOE is receiving applications from single principal investigators (PIs) and from small teams to advance basic and fundamental chemical and materials sciences that underpin clean energy technologies and low-carbon manufacturing. The goal is creation of foundational knowledge to support the development of approaches that will minimize climate impacts of energy technologies and manufacturing. For this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), clean energy technologies include approaches to capture, produce, convert, store, and use energy that reduce or eliminate unwanted emissions such as greenhouse gases (e.g., carbon dioxide, methane, etc.). These technologies also include approaches such as direct air capture and carbon storage/sequestration to decrease emissions that have been released into the environment from energy production and use. Low-carbon manufacturing refers to manufacturing processes that minimize carbon emissions and energy consumption. Investments from this FOA are anticipated to include awards that build foundational knowledge underpinning the Energy Earthshots Initiative.

For more information, view the full Chemical and Materials Sciences to Advance Clean Energy Technologies and Low-Carbon Manufacturing solicitation (FOA No. DE-FOA-0002676).

Award:

$200,000 to $1,500,000 per year for multi-PI projects.

$200,000 to $350,000 per year for single-PI projects.

The period of performance will be three (3) years.

Limited Submission Requirements and Timeline:

A total of three (3) applications per institution are permitted with up to two (2) applications for multi-PI efforts and up to three (3) applications for single-PI efforts.

Only proposals approved by the Division of Research and Economic Development may be submitted to this program.  For such approval, PIs must first submit a white paper to preaward@boisestate.edu by March 2.

Your white paper should include:

  • A cover page with the following details:
    • Title of Proposal
    • PI Name
    • Primary Topic Area (Include only 1)
    • Secondary Topic Area(s) (if applicable)
    • Application Type (multi-PI or single-PI)
    • Collaborators (if applicable)
  • A one-page summary of the proposal.

If selected to submit a full proposal, PIs must ensure that proposals meet all requirements stated in the RFP, in the announcement, and in the implementing laws and regulations related to this state grant program.

Key Submission Dates:

  • March 2, 2022 – White paper due to preaward@boisestate.edu. We encourage you to cc your Dean for visibility as well.
  • March 8 – Anticipated date Internal Awardees Notified
  • March 15, 2022Cover-Letter for Pre-Application due to OSP (for institutional signature)
  • March 16, 2022 – Pre-Application due to DOE
  • May 10, 2022 – Full proposal due to OSP
  • May 17, 2022 – Full proposal due to DOE

Important Notes on Requirements:

  • This FOA only supports basic and fundamental research. Applied research is outside the scope of the FOA.
  • You must propose research that targets a single “Topic Area”. See pages 3-6 of the FOA for details.
  • External collaborators are permitted, but must be proposed as subrecipients. Applications with subawards must ensure that more funding is requested for the prime applicant than for any other entity.
  • Individuals are limited to be lead-PI on one (1) pre-application or application. The PI on a pre-application or application may also be listed as a senior or key personnel on separate submissions without limitation.
