5 1/2 Things About Veterans

Let’s all remember to take this day, week – even month – to honor and celebrate all who’ve served in our armed forces. Roughly 18.2 million Veterans have served in the United States Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force or Coast Guard. Be sure to thank any Veterans you know or meet for their service.

1) Roughly 1200 Boise State students are Veterans

The most popular degrees for Veterans are in business, marketing and management.

2) 81% of student Veterans are active duty

Popular majors for Veterans include degrees in business, marketing, management and health professions. Veterans have a national average GPA of 3.34, higher than the national average of 2.94

3) Boise State has its own Veteran Services Center on campus

Veterans and dependents can get guidance on how to use their educational benefits such as the G.I. bill or tuition assistance. They also have access to educational counseling, a lending library, and a fully equipped computer lab. We’re excited to welcome our new Veteran Services director, Eluterio L. Escamilla, whose first day happens to be Veterans Day.

4) Boise State offers active duty, reserve and guard members tuition assistance

Boise State now honors the federal government’s tuition assistance rate of $250 per credit in select undergraduate online degree programs. On average, this new initiative will save participating students $1,600 per year.

5) Attend A Free Veterans Day Concert

The Boise Phil Master Chorale, Treasure Valley Concert Band and the Opera Idaho children’s chorus are hosting a free Veterans Day concert at 7 p.m. on November 11 at the Morrison Center.

We celebrate Veterans Day on November 11 because the World War I armistice was signed on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.
