5 1/2 Things to Celebrate About This Year

This year has been one like no other. But despite the craziness, we did get to celebrate some awesome events as well! Let’s take a look back at some of the great things that happened at Boise State this year.

1) In-person classes resumed

Whether they took place in the Student Union Building or ExtraMile Arena, Boise State began allowing in-person classes in the fall of 2020. Campus may not have been buzzing with students like usual, but it was still nice to see people’s faces – or a good portion at least. And who would’ve thought the basketball arena could double as a classroom?

2) Bronco athletics made a comeback

Albertsons Stadium opened back up in the fall for Boise State football to take on the Utah State Aggies in their first game of the season. Since then, the Broncos have been returning to courts and fields to do what they do best. Fans have even been allowed to attend some of these games and matches to cheer on the blue and orange.

3) A Covid-19 testing center opened

Boise State’s COVID Testing Center opened its doors last fall. The center allowed students, faculty, and staff to make appointments to be tested. It’s now open to family members of students and staff, the general public, and community partners. And even better news: Boise State now has a free vaccination clinic open to the general public.

4) We got a new athletic director AND head football coach

With a new year comes a lot of new changes and that’s exactly what happened with the Boise State athletic department. In January of 2021, not only was Andy Avalos hired as the new head football coach, but Jeramiah Dickey was hired as Boise State’s newest athletic director. The Broncos are ready to get back on The Blue with some fresh faces leading the way.

5) We had in-person commencement

The class of 2020 and 2021 received the greatest gift after a troubling year: in-person commencement. Albertsons Stadium was filled with proud parents and family members as they watched their graduates walk across the stage and earn their well-deserved diplomas. What a beautiful sight!

5 ½) Funny moments that happened over zoom

From forgetting to turn your mic off to being able to attend class from pretty much anywhere. Zoom itself created a lot of funny and possibly embarrassing memories at Boise State this year.
