Smart Materials and Systems

What is the ambitious goal of this project?

This course offers students hands-on experience in additive manufacturing, materials science, biomedical engineering. Using printed magnetically responsive smart composites, students will investigate how mechanical stimuli control the fate of human stem cells. This course will also include service-learning opportunities, in which students will work with high school teachers from Columbia high school (Nampa, ID) to mentor high school STEM teams.

Experience Gained

  • Work with Dr. Zhangxian Deng (MBE) to use magnetic, mechanical, or electric stimuli to control the fate of human stem cells.
  • Methodologies used in this project: engineering lab, K-12 outreach and collaboration, laboratory testing,

Majors or Interests Needed
