Graduate School
There are a couple things Career Services can help you with related to graduate school:
- The decision to attend grad school.
The decision whether to pursue grad school is part of your career planning process. In deciding whether grad school is for you, you must first consider your career goals and requirements or expectations regarding graduate degrees in your chosen field, along with your own personal values. For example, some careers require a graduate degree to qualify for entry-level positions, while in others, a graduate degree might not make you any more competitive. Therefore, it’s important to decide on a career path before deciding whether (or when) to pursue graduate school, and thoroughly research the educational expectations of that career through both online resources and informational interviews with professionals working in your intended career field. The Career Planning and Decision Making section of the Virtual Career Center can help you with this. - Applying to grad school.
Many graduate programs, especially those considered “professional” degree programs, ask applicants to submit a resume. The resume resources in the Application Materials section of the Virtual Career Center will help you with this. The application process may also involve an interview, which you can get help preparing for in the Interviewing section of the Virtual Career Center.
While you research your options for grad school, prepare for grad school, make yourself competitive, and apply (particularly if a curriculum vitae is required), we also recommend that you work closely with a faculty mentor who has more expertise in your discipline.
