Accelerated Master’s in Chemistry FAQ

The following will answer some of the most frequently asked questions about the Accelerated Master’s in Chemistry program.

Program Information

How long does it take to get a master's degree in the accelerated master's program?

The accelerated master’s program takes approximately 2 years, but this depends on the number of courses you take for your undergraduate degree that can count towards your master’s. Currently the courses offered that will count towards both degrees are CHEM 401/501 Advanced Inorganic Chemistry, CHEM 408/508 Advanced Organic Synthesis, CHEM 411/511 Advanced Analytical Chemistry, and CHEM 440/540 Spectrometric Identification.

How many classes does it take to get a master's degree?

To get a master’s in chemistry degree you must complete 30 credits and successfully defend your thesis. For more specific information on the credits required please visit Master of Science in Chemistry on the Boise State University Graduate College website.

What kind of jobs can I do with a master's in chemistry that I can’t with a bachelor's in chemistry?

This varies by industry, but in general, advanced tech positions with higher salaries require more than a bachelor’s degree.  Research & development departments also require more than a bachelor’s degree, too!

Is there any reason you would not recommend this to students? (seems too good to be true)

If you intend on pursuing a Ph.D. in chemistry, this program is not recommended for you.

Program Admissions Questions

How do I apply to the accelerated master's program?

Current Boise State chemistry majors can apply to the accelerated master’s program using the graduate college application. Please visit Graduate College Application

When should I apply?

Students who are interested in applying to the accelerated master’s program should apply prior to their second to last semester of their undergraduate degree. For example, if you are graduating in spring 2024, then you should apply to the accelerated master’s program by spring 2023.

What are the application deadlines?

The preferred application deadlines for the accelerated master’s program are March 15th for fall admission and October 15th for spring admission.

What is required to get into the program?

Do I have to take the GRE?

The GRE is not required for admission to the accelerated master’s program.  For more details, please visit Accelerated Master’s Program Information.

Can I do research with my current undergraduate faculty advisor?

Yes, although we encourage you to talk with several faculty advisors to find the best fit based on your goals and interests.

Financial Information Questions

How much does the accelerated master's program cost?

To find out more information on the cost for graduate courses at Boise State University, please visit Graduate Tuition & Fees. There is the possibility for funding with TA-ships (teaching assistantships) and RA-ships (research assistantships).

Are there options for TA-ships (teaching assistantships)?

The Department of Chemistry has 6 TA lines for the Master’s in Chemistry program.

Will this impact my financial aid my senior year of my undergraduate degree?

The impact on your financial aid is dependent per each student. Please contact the Financial Aid office at financialaid@boisestate.edu for further information.
