Faculty Members Honored with Statewide Arts Fellowships

Two Boise State University faculty members have been awarded fellowships from the Idaho Commission on the Arts (ICA). Professor Michael Baltzell and adjunct instructor Tracy Sunderland received the honor, along with $5,000.

Baltzell says he is “thrilled and honored” to win this fellowship for the second time. He previously won in 1990. Baltzell is rarely bored and works as a designer, painter, director and musician as well as a professor. Sunderland is a filmmaker, actor, writer and director. The extremely competitive fellowship recognizes the outstanding work of Idaho artists and writers and is only awarded to applicants deemed to have exhibited the highest artistic merit.

Leslie Durham, associate dean in the College of Arts and Sciences, said she is delighted that two theatre arts faculty members have been awarded this prestigious fellowship. “Michael Baltzell and Tracy Sunderland have been doing outstanding work on campus and far beyond for many years, and this recognition is truly well-deserved.”

Durham continued: “While the fellowships reward their remarkable histories of creative achievement, they also bring attention to the quality of the academic and production programs in Theatre Arts. Some of the best theatre and film in the state is made by these artists who also teach and create with Boise State’s students.”
