Cycle Learning Center Raises Money for Student Cancer Research

Raffle winner Michael Newgen poses with his new pink bike and CLC employees

Incoming freshman Michael Newgen, center, poses with his new bike and CLC employees.

During the month of April, the Cycle Learning Center ran a bike raffle to raise money for a new undergraduate cancer research fund. The bike shop parked a bright pink State Bicycle Co. single speed road bike, called Floyd, at the entrance of the Rec Center, as well as other locations around campus as an incentive to donate to the fund. The idea was to use an eye-catching bike to engage with the community and raise awareness about campus cancer research. The CLC worked with Cheryl Jorcyk, a professor of biological sciences, and contributed raffle donations to the new fund.

Anyone interested in entering the raffle was invited to make a donation to Boise State’s new cancer research fund. After a month of fundraising, the CLC had a drawing for the pink Floyd. The winner was Michael Newgen, an incoming freshman from the Boise area who loves riding bikes.

With the help of Mark Rudin and the Office of Research and Economic Development, the CLC set up an account called the Undergraduate Student Cancer Research Fund with the proceeds from the raffle. The university will start offering grants that undergraduate students undertaking cancer research can apply for. It will offer anywhere from $1,000-$5,000 grants. For more information about the fund, or to donate, please contact Jorcyk at cjorcyk@boisestate.edu.
