Seven local middle school and high school students won medals in the national Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. The contest is billed as the longest-running scholarship and recognition program for students in grades 7-12. The winners will be recognized by the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers at New York’s Carnegie Hall on June 2.
The Scholastic Art and Writing Program coordinates with National Writing Project sites throughout the U.S., including the Boise State Writing Project. Four years ago, a BSWP fellow helped establish the Idaho Scholastic Writing Awards to encourage submissions from Idaho students. Since then, young Idaho writers and artists have been recognized at the national level every year, and have collectively received $21,000 in scholarships.
Nic Darlinton from the Vallivue School District is this year’s coordinator of the Idaho Scholastic Writing Awards. He and other BSWP volunteers have recruited teachers to get involved, packaged and mailed invitations to every school in the state, helped students submit entries, assisted in the adjudication process and organized an awards ceremony.

Gold medal in Personal Essay/Memoir
