This week, the Boise Chamber Music Society will debut the world premier of a new commissioned work by composer Tarik O’Regan. At 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7 in the Morrison Center Recital Hall, the Alexander String Quartet will perform “Gradual,” an extended one-movement work inspired by the “subtle shifts of gently changing landscapes” O’Regan experienced in a tour of Southwest Idaho last year.
This extended one-movement work was commissioned by the Boise Chamber Music Society and the Boise State Department of Music to celebrate 30-plus years of presenting the Boise Chamber Music Series. British composer Tarik O’Regan will be giving a pre-concert session describing his compositional ideas, hosted by Boise State choral director Michael Porter.

Then, at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, the Alexander String Quartet will once again perform “Gradual,” this time for free in the Morrison Center Recital Hall. O’Regan will be in attendance at Saturday morning’s performance, introducing the new composition and joining the Alexander String Quartet in a discussion and question-and-answer session with the audience.
Following the event, the Alexander Quartet will perform string quartets written by Boise State music composition students. The public is invited to stay and hear the new student works and the artists’ comments and suggestions to the students.
