Gaye Hoopes, a former associate professor of art who taught drawing, watercolor and calligraphy at Boise State University, passed away peacefully on June 19 at the age of 80.
Richard Young, a colleague and friend of Gaye, remembers him as a gifted educator who loved his students.
“He was an exceptional traditional watercolorist and, in my opinion, one of the best in the Northwest,” Young said. “He always had a smile on his face and gave everything to his students. He offered watercolor workshops in the summer and would accommodate any student even if the class was full. He also served as a mentor to teachers enrolled in the master’s of art education program.”

Raised in Boise, Hoopes attended Boise Junior College, earning his associate’s degree in 1957 and later returning to Boise State University to receive his master’s in art education in 1981. He joined the art faculty in 1977 and taught intermittently at Boise State until 2011, when he retired.

A memorial will be held Aug. 5, where friends are welcome to celebrate his life, share stories and be surrounded by the beauty of his art. Arrangements are pending and will be published at a later date.
