MAJOR ENSEMBLE CONCERTS
BOISE STATE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA CONCERT
Sunday, Feb. 10 | 7:30 – 9:00pm | Morrison Center Main Hall
The Boise State University Symphony Orchestra opens the new year of concerts with “The All American!” Works of American composers featured on this program include, Samuel Barber’s “Adagio for Strings”, the spirited and patriotic Finale from “Symphony #2 by Charles Ives, Steven Reineke’s “Celebration Fanfare”, guest conducted by Maestro James Ogle, and George Gershwin’s ever so popular “Rhapsody in Blue” with Del Parkinson, pianist, as guest soloist. Come join Maestro Purdy, Maestro Ogle, and the Boise State Symphony Orchestra for a fun evening of American Classics!
Admission is $7 for adults, $5 for seniors. Children, non-Boise State students of any age (with ID), and Boise State faculty, staff and students with ID are admitted free. All concert proceeds fund Boise State Music Scholarships.

BOISE STATE ALL-STAR HIGH SCHOOL HONOR BAND
with the University Symphonic Winds Concert, featuring guest conductor/clinician, Timothy Mahr

Dr. Timothy Mahr is a professor of music at St. Olaf College, where he is the conductor of the St. Olaf Band, and teaches courses in composition, conducting, and music education. Active in 35 states as a guest conductor and clinician, Mahr has also appeared professionally in Norway, Mexico, Singapore, and Canada. He has been in residence as a guest composer/conductor on over thirty college and university campuses.

The Treasure Valley Concert Band is in its 36th season, comprised of musicians from all walks of life, who enjoy playing fine wind instrument literature. The group plays three regular concerts per year, repeating those concerts in various communities throughout the Treasure Valley.
Conductor Marcellus Brown came to Boise State University in 1989 and has been directing this group for over 20 years. He has been recognized for his work and dedication as an outstanding conductor not only at Boise State, but is asked to conduct all-state music groups and ensembles locally, throughout the United States, and abroad.
The TVCB program is designed to please audiences of all ages, filled with familiar music from years past, classic band literature, Broadway show tunes and current film scores, designed to encourage you to tap your feet and play or sing along in your mind.

Join Dr. Michael Porter in a two-part concert series devoted to the cantatas of Johann Sebastian Bach.
On February 9, Dr. Porter will be joined by Dr. Andrew Cortens (Chair of Boise State’s Philosophy Department) as they explore the musical and emotional themes in three of Bach’s solo cantatas (Ice habe genung, Wiederstehe doch der Suende, and Ich bin vergnuegt mit meine Gluecke) Also featured in this concert will be Dr. Jeanne Belfy (oboe), Jason Detweiler (bass), Michele Detweiler (mezzo-soprano), Amanda Gardner Porter (soprano), and the Boise State University Graduate String Quartet.
On February 24, Dr. Porter will be joined by Rabbi Dan Fink from Congregation Ahavath Beth Israel and Rev. Rich Demarest from St. Michael’s Cathedral as they explore the musical and spiritual themes in two of Bach’s choral cantatas (Ershallet, ihr lieder; and Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland). Also featured in this concert will be Boise State students Rebecca Schneider, Alisa Millard, Esther Roedel, Anthony Ames, David Le, and the Boise State University Meistersingers.

As one of nine performing ensembles in The United States Air Force Academy Band, Rampart Winds is featured as the traditional woodwind quintet. Each member of the ensemble brings to the forefront a wealth of musical knowledge and experience, having performed in numerous orchestras and music festivals around the world. Some of these locations include countries in North America, Central America, Asia, and Europe. By performing a diverse repertoire including original works, standard and contemporary compositions, and patriotic favorites, Rampart Winds superbly supports its missions of community relations, educational outreach, and Air Force recruiting. In addition to these missions, this exquisitely polished and refined ensemble is in high demand for diplomatic and military protocol events throughout the country. These events have included the First Ladies’ Dinner hosted by former President Clinton in Denver, the opening of the D-Day Museum in New Orleans, and ceremonies for numerous U.S. and foreign dignitaries. The quintet’s engaging approach to clinics and workshops makes it a favorite in academic circles, benefiting students of all ages. Upholding one of the core values of The USAF Academy Band, Rampart Winds exemplifies the highest standards of musical excellence. In recent years, members of the Rampart Winds have performed for the National Flute Association, the International Clarinet Association, and the International Double Reed Society conventions. The music of Rampart Winds has been broadcast on National Public Radio, PBS, and television stations worldwide.
