COAS call for applications for the Inaugural Director for the School of the Environment

The School of the Environment Director will join the COAS Dean, the Senior Associate Dean for Finance and Administration, the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Academic Leadership, the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Research and Creative Activity, Associate Dean for Student Success and Undergraduate Education, the Director of the School of the Arts, and the Assistant Dean of Operations and Strategic Initiatives on the college-level executive leadership team.

Timeline

Required qualifications

  • Tenured Boise State faculty member in a discipline relevant to the School of the Environment
  • Three years of leadership experience
  • Demonstrated commitment to creating a diverse and inclusive community at Boise State

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience creating or supporting interdisciplinary faculty or student activities and/or graduate and/or undergraduate programming
  • Experience creating new programming or leading revision of existing programming
  • Experience supporting research and creative activity of faculty colleagues
  • Experience supporting student research or creative activity at the undergraduate and graduate levels
  • Record of receiving external funding for research or creative activity
  • Experience representing the needs and interests of a broad constituency
  • Experience with donors
  • Roles and responsibilities
  • Setting the vision and strategic goals for the School
  • Appointing additional members of the School leadership team (2 co-directors focused on academic programming and scholarship)
  • Establishing transparent and sustainable governance structures and practices for the School including for faculty and for Centers/Institutes
  • Forging a sense of community and identity for those affiliated with the School
  • Collaborating with Boise State deans, chairs, and faculty to advance the School and its activities.
  • Designing interdisciplinary graduate and undergraduate programming within the School and partnering with existing programs to enhance student access to and awareness of those programs (graduate and undergraduate)
  • Providing faculty with School-level opportunities
  • Advocate for SoE faculty and SoE-aspiring faculty and provide feedback on annual review and P&T for SoE faculty
  • Providing students with School-level experiences or activities
  • Communicating out the goals and achievements of the School
  • Collaborate with the Dean and COAS executive team on the management of F&A generated by School activities
  • Building relationships with community partners
  • Partnering with the COAS dean on philanthropic activities related to the School including seating and leading an advisory board
  • Other responsibilities as assigned

Compensation, workload, and reporting

  • This position comes with an annual $20,000 support package.
    • This support may be received as a stipend, buyouts, research funds, summer salary, or a combination of these components. The compensation will be negotiated with the COAS Dean and the department chair of the director’s home department.
    • The usual start date for this position is August 1. In order to be fair to the other COAS leaders whose compensation started on that date, this year’s compensation will be prorated to reflect the date of appointment.
  • If additional funding is required to complete special projects or to balance the needs of the department and the school, the COAS Dean will utilize one-time funds to support these needs.
  • Workload percentages/allocations will be negotiated with the COAS Dean at the time of appointment.
  • If the Director is a COAS faculty member, they will report to the COAS Dean. If they have a faculty home in another college, reporting will be negotiated at the time of hire.

Term length

  • The School Director will serve for three years.
  • Directors can be appointed for more than one 3-year term with a recompete for the position at the end of each term.
