The science elective required in the BSME degree table can be satisfied by any combination of approved science and mathematics courses totaling at least four (4) credits. Courses required by the BSME degree, such as MATH 170, cannot also be used to satisfy the science-elective requirement.

The Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering Department has developed a list of pre-approved science and mathematics electives based upon the following definitions of basic science and mathematics:

Science

Science courses satisfying the science elective include chemistry, physics, life, earth, and space sciences. Science courses must meet our required level of rigor to satisfy the science elective.

Pre-approved Science Courses

  • Any biology course with a course-prefix number equal to or greater than 100.
  • Any chemistry course with a course-prefix number equal to or greater than 111.
  • Any geography course with a course-prefix number equal to or greater than 100.
  • Any geosciences course with a course-prefix number equal to or greater than 100.
  • Any physics course with a course-prefix number greater than 200.
  • Any zoology course with a course-prefix number equal to or greater than 100.

Mathematics

Mathematics courses must meet our required level of rigor to satisfy the science elective. Appropriate mathematics courses include calculus, differential equations, probability, statistics, linear algebra, and discrete mathematics. Pre-calculus preparation courses do not provide the appropriate level of rigor for the science elective.

Pre-approved Mathematics Courses

  • Any math course requiring a prerequisite of MATH 170 or higher; or
  • Any upper-division math course.

Non-pre-approved courses and the Science and Mathematics required elective

Courses not on the pre-approved list may still be used to satisfy the Science and Mathematics required elective, as long as the following conditions are satisfied:

  • The course satisfies our definition of science or mathematics;
  • The student’s advisor approves the course; and
  • The course is not required for the BSME degree.
