Overview
The CTL, in collaboration with the Research Computing Department (OIT) and the Department of Computer Science, is announcing a call for applications to the “Large Language Model Faculty Learning Community (LLM-FLC). This work is part of a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant that is supporting the creation of an internal Large Language Model (LLM) that can be used to support teaching and learning at our university.
The LLM-FLC will provide participants with the skills and knowledge to use this new LLM, or similar AI technology, to develop best practices and gain insights about the use of AI in education; participants will also have the opportunity to fine-tune a local LLM using prompts and targeted data sets through a web interface. We are currently seeking applicants for the first year of this program (10 participants in total) who are interested in using the LLM in their course planning/implementation.
Program Goals
Participants will:
- Explore opportunities to use machine learning tools to develop/refine instructional strategies
- Gain insights about the use of AI in education
- Explore AI applications for teaching and learning
Benefits of Participating
By joining the LLM-FLC, faculty will get practical experience using AI tools to support teaching and learning and help contribute to best practices for using AI in assignments/assessments for their course(s). Â
Eligibility
All faculty members (of any rank) are eligible to participate. Applicants should have an interest in applying AI tools and strategies in their current course(s); some experience using LLMs (e.g., ChatGPT or Google Gemini) will be helpful. Preference will be given to participants who can commit to the yearlong FLC.
FLC Commitment
Participants will meet for seven (7) meetings per semester. Each session will last 75 minutes and meet every other week. In the Fall semester, participants will learn and explore the LLM while developing an assignment for the spring semester. In the spring semester, participants will implement the assignment, share reflections, and receive and provide feedback on the process.
Compensation
Participants who attend each session and create and implement an assignment in their course(s) will receive $400.00 per semester.
