Teaching with Canvas Community of Practice

Teaching in Canvas Community of Practice

For the Fall 2021 semester, the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) is partnering with eCampus Center to facilitate a community of practice (CoP) focused on teaching in Canvas, Boise State’s new learning management system. In the CoP, faculty will share their discoveries about Canvas and how they are best utilizing its design and features in their teaching. Registration is currently open to sign up for this CoP. Please read over the information below, and if interested, register at the link provided at the bottom of the page.

Overview

The Teaching with Canvas CoP will meet on a weekly basis starting the week of September 13th, 2021 and will formally continue to the end of the fall semester. Then after that, you’ll be encouraged to leverage your CoP network to continue to share tips and resources. The dates and time for each meeting will be determined by participants based upon their availability. Each meeting will be conducted remotely over Zoom and will last approximately 75 minutes. The general structure of each meeting will be as follows:

  • The first 15 minutes will be devoted to participants answering each other’s questions from the previous week and sharing any discoveries with the group.
  • For the next 45 minutes, participants will join breakout rooms to share details of their discoveries, ask each other questions, and search for solutions.
  • For the final 15 minutes, participants will reconvene in the main room to share any new thoughts or questions with the entire group. For any unanswered questions, participants will volunteer to do research and follow-up with their discoveries at the next meeting.

The Community of Practice will initially be led by staff from eCampus, the CTL, and LTS. Once the CoP has had time to establish itself, participants within the CoP will take over its facilitation, and staff from eCampus, the CTL and LTS will be present for any assistance.

During the time between our CoP meetings, participants are encouraged to reach out to one another with any teaching-related questions or ideas. To facilitate this, a Google Room will be set up to allow for real-time chat amongst participants. In addition, a shared Google doc will be utilized as a place to collect resources and ideas to share with the group.

Requirements

There are no set attendance requirements to participate in the Teaching with Canvas Community of Practice. However, for the CoP to succeed, it requires active participation from everyone, so we strongly encourage participants to attend each meeting every week.
