New age constraints on Western Gondwanan glaciation

New U-Pb zircon geochronology from the Isotope Geology Laboratory has established an unprecedented chronology of Late Paleozoic glacial deposits in western Gondwanan Paganzo and Rio Blanco basins (Argentina). Lead author Erik Gulbranson, a Ph.D. student at the University of California at Davis, worked in the IGL in 2008-2009 to acquire these first high-precision ID-TIMS ages for proximal Gondwanan deposits of the Late Paleozoic Ice Age (LPIA). The article, published in the Geological Society of America Bulletin, represents one product of a multi-disciplinary study to understand the growth and demise of the LPIA, funded by the National Science Foundation (EAR-0545247).
