Commencement and Regalia

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the appropriate dress for the ceremony?

Regalia is required to participate in the ceremony. Business attire is suggested. High heels with a width smaller than 2 inches by 2 inches will not be allowed on The Blue. Stiletto heels can not only damage the turf but are very unstable on this surface and can cause serious injury. Wedge sandals are acceptable. If students arrive wearing heels smaller than 2 inches by 2 inches in width, they will be given flip-flops to wear. Please do not bring anything you need to carry except your name cards. There is no place to lock up, secure, or leave personal items. You must either leave items with a family member or carry them with you.

Why are there different colors of tassels and hoods for each college?

Colors are based on the graduate’s degree. They serve as a way of making graduates recognizable based on the college in which they earned their degree.

Where do I place my tassel?

The tassel is placed on the left side.

What else should I know?

You can make a difference by donating your cap and gown to an “at risk” student at our local Frank Church High School. Many students at this school cannot afford the cost of regalia required to participate in their commencement ceremony. Donation boxes are set up at the reception to collect regalia until 2 p.m. on the day of commencement. Be sure to keep your tassel and medallion.
