News and Updates
Student Loan Repayment
Don’t wait! Prepare for student loan payments to restart now. The Supreme Court issued a decision blocking the Biden-Harris Administration’s Student Debt Relief Plan and all student loans will need to be repaid. The COVID-19 payment pause has been lifted and payments are due in October. Take action now to be fully prepared before payments resume.
A Fresh Start for Federal Student Loan Borrowers in Default
The U.S. Department of Education announced an initiative—called “Fresh Start”—to help eligible borrowers in default. If your loans are eligible, you’ll temporarily regain several student aid benefits. You’ll also get the opportunity to get out of default and keep those benefits for the long term.
Fresh Start will continue through December 31, 2023 – one year after the COVID-19 payment pause ends.
A New Income-Driven Repayment (IDR) Plan
The Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) Plan provides nearly all student borrowers with the lowest monthly payments of any IDR plan. Borrowers on the REPAYE Plan will automatically get the benefits of the new SAVE Plan.
Other federal student loan programs
The Supreme Court blocked the one-time debt relief plan (you may also know this as the forgiveness of up to $20,000 for Pell Grant borrowers). But you may be able to get help repaying your loans, including full loan forgiveness, through other federal student loan programs.
Beware of scams
You might be contacted by a company saying they will help you get loan discharge, forgiveness, cancellation, or debt relief for a fee. You never have to pay for help with your federal student aid. Make sure you work only with the U.S. Department of Education, the office of Federal Student Aid, and our loan servicers, and never reveal your personal information or account password to anyone. Learn how to avoid scams and what you can do if you’re contacted by a scammer.
Emails to borrowers come from noreply@studentaid.gov, noreply@debtrelief.studentaid.
FAFSA Simplification Act
You may have heard, or may start hearing more people talk about the FAFSA Simplification Act that was passed by Congress in 2021. Changes to the FAFSA are being made along with updates to the processes and systems used to award federal student aid for the 2024–2025 award year. With these changes, the FAFSA application for 2024-2025 will not be available on October 1, as usual. We are currently anticipating that the Department of Education will have it open in December 2023. Please refer to StudentAid.gov for the most up to date information and news.
