 My research explores how diverse sources of knowledge and expertise can create collaborative and adaptive management approaches that support sustainable and thriving human-ecological systems.  

Ecological indicators are aspects of an ecosystem or ecosystem process that represent the condition or quality of that aspect or process. My research seeks to learn what ecological indicators ranchers and BLM land managers use in semi-arid Idaho rangelands to better understand the unique knowledge opportunities for rangeland management. Understanding the state of local ecological knowledge in southern Idaho will provide helpful insights into how the institutions, livelihoods, and ecosystems currently interact and how management can best support the landscape and the people that use it.

Ecological indicators also play a role in monitoring rangelands. Rangeland monitoring can facilitate adaptive management and help managers make decisions that support healthy rangelands. My research seeks to understand how the variety of ecological indicators that ranchers and BLM rangeland managers use relate to monitoring and evaluation of the landscape.
