This talk discusses a project in Anacostia, Washington, D.C.,
tracing frames of how Black residents of the neighborhood
evaluate white presence in the neighborhood. The talk
illustrates how these frames help reproduce discourses which
see gentrification as a purely racial rather than economic
issue, and allows the community members to position the
neighborhood’s Black residents as a single cohesive
community staking a firm claim on Black urban space.

The lecture is sponsored by the Idaho Humanities Council, the Boise State
Department of English, the Mary Ellen Ryder Linguistics Lab, and the
Boise State Gender Studies Program. A question and answer period with the students from this semester’s LING 497 will follow the lecture.
