Research Areas

Patrick is currently studying pyroclastic density current deposits generated in the May 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens.

Pyroclastic density current (PDCs) are some of the most dangerous and complex products of volcanism. PDCs are fast moving mixtures of volcanic material that are inherently difficult to study. He is interested in the studying these events using a mixture of field work and in-lab quantitative analysis. A fuller understanding of these events will ultimately improve their risk assessment.

Collaboration

As an undergraduate, Patrick hopes to interact and learn from researchers from disparate backgrounds. He believes the toughest questions require a multi-disciplinary approach. Ultimately, he would like to collaborate with others to inform the public about volcanic risks and improve risk perception.
