Summary:
Specialty crop grant funding is provided by the United States Department of Agriculture and is allocated to the state to be awarded through a competitive grant process. Projects must enhance the competitiveness of U.S. grown specialty crops in either domestic or foreign markets and must provide a benefit to more than just the applicant. Specialty crops include fruits and vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits, horticulture, and nursery crops, including floriculture.

Award:
There are no minimum or maximum limits on the amount of funds that can be requested for one project, but the average grant amount in the past has been between $50,000-$100,000.
Limited Submission Requirements and Timeline:
Four (4) applications per institution are permitted.
Only proposals approved by the Division of Research and Economic Development may be submitted to this program. For such approval, Principal Investigators (PIs) must first submit one-page white paper to preaward@boisestate.edu by February 8, 2023 at 12 PM.
If selected to submit a full proposal, Principal Investigators (PIs) must ensure that proposals meet all requirements stated in the RFP, in the announcement, and in the implementing laws and regulations related to this grant program.
Key Submission Dates:
- February 8, 2023 at 12 PM – White Paper due to preaward@boisestate.edu.
- February 24, 2023 – Full proposal due to OSP.
- March 3, 2023 – Full proposal due to ISDA. Note: The official due date is March 5, but this is a Sunday. We will submit the proposal by close of business on Friday, March 3.
Important Note on Requirements:
- Each application is limited to a single project scope.
- Applications must enhance the competitiveness of U.S. specialty crops in either domestic or foreign markets.
- Applications should show how the project potentially impacts and produces measurable outcomes for the specialty crop industry and/or the public rather than a single organization, institution, or individual.
