ENVSTD 490: Certification in Environmental Education, Fall 2021

Are you interested in working in the field of environmental education (EE) and/or outdoor leadership? Want to gain specific skills in outdoor leadership/education to prepare you for a career in this field AND earn credit for them? We have a new class offering that could be ideal for you!

The Environmental Studies program is currently recruiting students to enroll in a new course this fall that is linked to the Environmental Education Certificate. The goal is to help prepare students for career opportunities in the EE field and increase their skills/marketability in the field. This course is somewhat like an internship, but connected to a specific certificate.

In ENVSTD 490: Certification Experience in Environmental Education, students earn academic credit for taking an outdoor education certification course such as Wilderness First Responder, Wilderness First Aid, NOLS Instructor course, Swiftwater Rescue, Ropes Course Instructor, Idaho Master Naturalist,  etc. Students in 490 will translate the skills they are gaining in their certification course to their degree/personal/career goals by completing weekly reflection activities, skills assessment/resume, and final portfolio.  The 490 course is offered for variable credits (depending upon the hours of the certificate course) and is offered fully online this fall.

Students will find a certification course on their own, however, we have a list of possible courses that students can consider. We can also assist students in finding a certification course of interest in our local area.

Students who apply and enroll in the Fall Backpacking or Spring Raft Guide Training through the Boise State Outdoor Program Trip Leader program can apply this training to this course.  Students who will enroll/complete a certification course this summer may also be able to use this for the class – please contact Mari directly for more information on either of these options.
