Frequently Asked Questions

No! BroncoLink is not a replacement for Handshake. While you *can* post jobs directly on BroncoLink, the jobs section of BroncoLink already includes a feed of all jobs on Handshake. We direct students primarily to Handshake to look for jobs, so please make sure any positions you want to advertise are posted there. The BroncoLink platform serves a different purpose, which is to facilitate direct connections between students and alumni or employers who are willing to provide some kind of career assistance.

Can I contact students on the platform or do they have to contact me first?

You can initiate contact with students and we encourage you to do so! Reaching out to a professional is scary for students, so making the first contact is a great way to help them over that hurdle. That said, for good results, follow the best practices below and please do not spam students with unsolicited information about job openings – this can actually damage your organization’s reputation on campus.

Best practices for contacting students:

  • Students REALLY don’t like communication that feels like spam. Don’t mass-message everyone on the platform with generic content.
  • View profiles and select specific students to reach out to.
  • Target your communication so students feel like you specifically chose them to reach out to. Reference one or more things about their background, interests, or goals that made you choose them to reach out to.
  • Don’t immediately share job openings – this can make your message sound like more of a sales pitch. Instead, offer to help, giving examples of ways you’re available to them, such as an informational interview, answering questions about career preparation, or sharing advice about applying to jobs in your industry.

How much time is required? What am I committing to by signing up?

That’s really up to you, and something you can change at any time. You can spend as much or as little time as you would like providing support to the future workforce. When you sign up, you will be able to select what types of help you want to be available for from a menu of basic options. These include things like “introduction to professional connections,” “answer industry specific questions,” “meet for coffee,” or “resume review.” You can update your selections at any time.

You can also put a cap on the number of students you’re willing to “mentor” at a given time. It’s important to keep in mind that any engagement is always optional, and you’re never really committed to doing anything. If a student reaches out to you at a time when you don’t have the bandwidth to assist, you may decide to connect them with someone else instead. The only thing we ask is that you don’t completely ignore a request – at least respond and let the student know you aren’t available or able to assist.

How can I let students know when I’m coming to campus?

BroncoLink has a feed you can post to that is very similar to LinkedIn or other social media platforms. This is a great place to announce your upcoming visit. Like on social media, consider including a simple graphic, photo, or video to attract attention. With students, less is more, so minimize text on graphics, and keep your post as short and concise as possible. Provide links to more information, and consider linking open positions you’re recruiting for if appropriate.

How can I attract students’ attention?

A complete profile is key! This will help give students lots of ways they could potentially match with you. For example, they may not have searched for your company or for your current job title, but maybe you had the same major, or were in the same type of student club, or they’re interested in a job you previously held.

If you’re finding students aren’t reaching out to you, don’t forget that you can reach out and initiate that contact. Remember, students often find this very intimidating or aren’t sure where to start, and you reaching out can give them the helping hand they need to get started.
