Three members of Boise State’s faculty — Richard Klautsch, Gordon Reinhart, professors of theatre arts, and Linda Kline, a professor of viola — will play roles in the Boise Philharmonic Chamber Series performance of Igor Stravinsky’s “The Soldier’s Story” on Jan. 14.
“The Soldier’s Story” was originally a theatrical piece for violin, double bass, clarinet, bassoon, trumpet, trombone and percussion. Actors tell the story. Klautsch will narrate. Reinhart and Kline will play the roles of a soldier and a devil, respectively.
The piece, written in 1918 just after World War I, tells the story of a young soldier who gives his violin to the devil in exchange for a book that predicts the future. The soldier agrees to spend what he believes is three days with the devil so that he can learn to read the book. In actuality, he’s gone three years. “The Soldier’s Story” traces the soldier’s life as he becomes wealthy thanks to the devil’s book, but then tries to return to the simplicity of his former life, ultimately falling prey to the devil’s bargain.
The performance is at 2 p.m. Jan. 14 at the Egyptian Theater, 700 W. Main St. in Boise.
“The Soldier’s Story” kicks off a new season for the Boise Philharmonic Chamber Players. Season tickets are available through the Boise Philharmonic website.
