ElanorTaylor-500x333

Philosopher Elanor Taylor will speak on “Groups and Oppression” at 3:30 p.m. Friday, April 8, in Education Building Room 109. The Boise State community is invited to attend this event, sponsored by the Department of Philosophy.

Taylor is an assistant professor at Iowa State University. Her research sits at the intersection of metaphysics, philosophy of science and philosophy of mind, and she is particularly interested in questions about explanation. She also has an interest in the metaphysical side of philosophy of gender.

Oppression is a form of injustice that occurs when one social group is subordinated while another is privileged, and oppression is maintained by a variety of different mechanisms including social norms, stereotypes and institutional rules. A key feature of oppression is that it is perpetrated by and affects social groups. Taylor will show that the role of groups in oppression creates certain metaphysical problems for oppression theories, and identify resources that oppression theorists can use to address these problems.
