Books In Every Home PonyUp Campaign Successful

Nearly 50 donors contributed more than $2,000 in cash during the three-week campaign to successfully fund the Books in Every Home PonyUp campaign. With these funds, supplemented by donations of gently used books, the senior capstone in literature class will visit four Title 1 elementary classrooms on Nov. 17 to read aloud and distribute books to first graders before the Thanksgiving holiday.

Based upon donations and pledges made during the campaign, Boise State literature students expect to present every first grader at Whittier Elementary and Garfield Elementary with a package of three new and used books. Thirty children will receive “Bad Rats,” donated by author Eric Drachman of California-based Kidwick Books. Sixty children will receive the booklet “Adventures with Animals Big and Small,” a compilation of light-hearted nineteenth-century animal stories selected by class members from magazine research. Boise State art student Sarah Obendorf won the job of illustrating the booklet in a close competition with other excellent candidates. Other books purchased with PonyUp donations include hardback picture books, atlases, pocket-sized books, early readers, western authors and presses, and more.

The students in Tara Penry’s senior capstone in literature class thank their professors, family members, friends and community members who took part in the campaign.
