May 15, 2014: Navajo Pentecostal practice of “Dancing in the Spirit.”

I wanted to draw your attention to what promises to be a fascinating public lecture for the Boise City Department of Arts and History. This talk will be given by Dr. Kimberly J. Marshall, Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the University of Oklahoma.Dr. Marshall specializes in the anthropology of religion and expressive culture. Her research focuses on the shifting ontologies in Native North America in the face of the aggressive spread of Global Pentecostalism, specifically as it manifests in expressive form at Navajo-led tent revivals.

The talk will deal with the aesthetics and cultural resonances of the Navajo Pentecostal practice of “Dancing in the Spirit.” It is scheduled for Thursday, May 15, at 6pm, and will take place in the Sesqui-Shop in downtown Boise, located at 150 N Capitol Blvd. First floor of Boise City Hall.
