Biography

Dr. Amy Arellano is a social justice scholar who focuses on poetry as a tool for advocacy and liberation, using teaching as a venue to embody a critical pedagogy of love. At Boise State University, they serve as an Assistant Professor in Communication and Assistant Director of Forensics. Recognizing the empowering nature of debate, they work to break down the walls of the ivory tower by extending the circumference of their classroom to include weekly volunteering to teach a class in argumentation for those incarcerated within the broken criminal justice system. They see poetry as a method of accessibility, connection, and political activism. Amy has two journal publications of poetry: one as a word-wielding womb fighting against the political war on women and one criticizing Title IX as a mandatory reporter and sexual assault survivor. In addition, they have an upcoming book, Poetic Protest: A Journey in Advocacy and Love.
